I have struggled for years to get a promotion. My submissions to online job posting go nowhere. This guide gives me some understanding of where I was going wrong. Not cultivating a network was my biggest mistake. I need to fix that and get my career back on track. Great ideas presented by Mr.Mark. Thanks.

Hard work is the key to success - and Mark seems to pay too little attention to that. All the other stuff is just ... stuff!

My only regret - why was this guide not available sooner.

I find it interesting that everyone who looks for career advancement uses the tools laid out in this guide - even if they don’t know it. When looking for a leg up what is the first thing people do - they turn to people they know. Their resume is filled with things that they are good at and hopefully shows what they excel at. And Lastly, when they land that promotion they want to make the impression that they are likeable. It’s just common sense - and I think it is great advice to use these tools ALL the time to make that name for yourself.

what was it I heard…
"Whether you know it or not, you already have a brand - others have determined your brand for you."

Once you think of it that way, you realize the importance of building your own brand and image.

Thanks for reminding us that we have the power to make choices in life.

I appreciate your forthrightness in pointing out that being smart professionals is all about taking responsibility and making tough choices.

Mark - We should alwaus remember that even in making the hard decisions, you can’t lose sight of the fact that you are making a decision. Even the choice to change nothing is a choice.

I realise how the “Golden Handcuffs” have taken control as we, little by little, tighten them over our own wrists.

It's a wake-up call for those of us on autopilot.

ASME (asme.org) provides electronic mentoring to students or entry level graduates. An overall good service.

I’ve been struggling with this “find your passion” and “do what you love” language for some time now. But unfortunately it does not work for me. I’ve done plenty of things I’ve loved, and the money never came. Conversely, what was routine ended up putting dollars in the bank. I think we need to rethink this misleading, possibly damaging success mantra.

Ties in nicely with my 2008 resolution to actively manage my career and get a promotion. Great advice.

I wish I had tracked all my yearly accomplishments. Now I am having to review my emails and search for feedback that will validate my performance review. Definitely a lesson learned.

Most of my managers are only concerned with my billable state. Career growth and mentoring are alien concepts to them. I need to find better managers to work with.

Moving about is also problematic from a perspection perspective. Recruiters are leery of candidates who have had multiple jobs in the past. One needs to be cautious before switching jobs.

I do agree that people should worry less about the length of their stay with a company and proactively seek other opportunities as a means to progress their careers. In my experience, I can tell you I have seen a change in the perceptions towards those candidates that change jobs every 2-3 years, but most hiring managers I have dealt with are quick to question those that “hop” jobs.

There is a name for establishing your credibility - "active marketing". Never realized the importance of my everyday actions and interactions on my brand. This section was an eye-opener on how to market yourself.
